On Derby Day, May 3, Maplewood and Meramec Valley Community Kiwanis Clubs sponsored “Race for the Roses,” a 5K run held at Queeny Park in west St. Louis County. Nancy Willimon (Meramec Valley Community) was the creator and led the coordination of the race. Bonnie Paulsmeyer (Maplewood) coordinated efforts between the two clubs. Rene Knott from KSDK-TV was the Master of Ceremonies and provided much excitement about Kiwanis and raising funds for St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
In its first year, Race for the Roses raised $3,000 for St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Thanks to the 19 Kiwanians from Maplewood and Meramec Valley Community who volunteered the day of the race. There were over 20 sponsors including the Division 9 Kiwanis Clubs of Maplewood, Meramec Valley Community, Crestwood-Sunset Hills, Kirkwood, and Gravois-St. Louis County, as well as individual Kiwanis members from these clubs and many businesses and other individuals.
